The very name suggests a desert of mirages, and Bahar IC Caghaq does indeed boast its own cactus forest. The Qalet Marku medieval tower, right on the beach, rises like a vision out of the yellow rock from which it is formed. There is also a marine zoo with dolphins, seals and parrot shows. Situated in the municipality of Naxxar, along the coast between fashionable St Julian’s and St Paul’s Bay, the Maltese name translates as “sea of pebbles”. The zone is, indeed, famous for its bathing waters and expanse of pebble beach. Once the site of a campsite during the British occupation, the town is now best-known for its White Rocks bathing area, among other things for the ice-cream kiosk which enjoys a popularity of practically cult proportions. This is small-town Malta at its best, up-and-coming without being overpriced. For small businesses, this is a great seaside resort to settle in.
